Setup Considerations

Now that you have the best gear, you need to get it ready and practice setting it up so that you're ready to use it and without having to bother with the setup. Think simplicity and easy access - you don't want to be bothered by cables and loose ends when you're enjoying your high adrenalin activity.

Choose a pelican case or box or bag that can comfortably fit your camera, the battery and all the extra cables..

You may want to file away a small groove on one side to allow the cables for the bullet cam, microphone and remote control to  pass outside the box.

Plug your audio/video cable into the camera.

Make sure the plug is firmly seated all the way in and perhaps run the line under the handle strap if you can.

Wrap the extra line around the camera so there is no chance of it coming out or working loose.

Plug the remote control into the LANC plug, again making sure it is seated all the way.

If possible, run it under a straps so it won't work loose.

Connect the bullet camera to the video line (yellow RCA plug) and the microphone to the audio line (white RCA). The SuperCable will split the mono microphone to both left and right channels.

Connect the power plugs to the camera and microphone, and then to the battery. [You may want to use electrical tape to keep those connections tight.]

Remember that whenever the battery is connected to the camera and microphone it is running the battery down. This should be the last step before you close the box.

Also, when you're not using the camera, unplug the power to save juice on the battery !

Bundle as much of the excess cable together and tape it up neatly to get it out of the way. this may take a few trials to get it down to the correct length you want.

The bundle can then fit tightly with your camera and the battery in your case / bag.

Make sure the camera is on, in VCR mode and the light of the remote is showing green (ready). Check through the viewfinder to see that a video signal is coming in.

TIP : Some camcorders have speakers that will give feedback unless you turn the volume right down or mute it.

Run the lines out of the box (bullet camera, microphone and remote control).

For a helmet mount, you can have several mounting spots with heavy velcro, and a light velcro strip to hold the cables back.

Take note of the TOP label on the camera so that the velcro is on the right side to get video the right way up.

NOTE : Be sure that you have ample slack on the cabling to allow your head free movement during flight /activity. Test this out BEFORE you launch, if possible hang your harness in a simulator to be sure that where you stash your camera box / bag, gives you complete freedom of movement and ability to lean in all directions without being constrained by the cables.

PARAGLIDING : Sometime it is best to put the camera box / bag at the top of your harness back pouch, run the cables over your shoulder while you get into your harness, and then mount the camera and microphone on the helmet. Putting the microphone into the inside cushioning of a full face helmet will reduce wind noise, and if you have a radio speaker in your helmet, can pick up radio communication as well. cool !

Run the remote control to an easily accessible spot in front of you. Sometimes attaching a small block of velcro to the back of the remote control allows you to easily stick the remote to the front of your flight suit, or even the inside of your full face helmet.
